
What is SELT?
Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) assess English Language ability and are taken under specific secure conditions. Trinity SELTs are approved by UKVI, part of the Home Office, for Leave to Remain, British Citizenship (Naturalisation) and Tier 1, 2 and 4 visa categories where evidence of English language ability is a requirement.
Where can I take a SELT?
Trinity Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) are approved for applications to UKVI for visas, UK visa renewal, British Citizenship and Leave to Remain.
Trinity has 16 SELT centres across the UK providing exam sessions throughout the week and is committed to providing you with the safest test experience possible at this time.

Which test do I need?
Trinity SELTs – English tests for visas:
- Speaking and listening in English test GESE: Graded Examinations in Spoken English
Available at levels A1, A2 and B1 Reading, writing, speaking and listening in English test
- ISE: Integrated Skills in English
Available at levels B1, B2 and C1
Where can I take a Trinity SELT exam?
Trinity’s SELT exams are available at test centres across the UK. These are located in London Croydon, London Holborn, London Hammersmith, Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Peterborough.
Further Leave to Remain (A1)
For Further Leave to Remain you must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in at least CEFR level A1 in Speaking and Listening.
Trinity’s GESE Grade 2 exam (CEFR A1)
- 6 minute speaking and listening test
- Provisional results on the same day
- Certificate usually sent within 7 days
- Speaking and listening only
Further Leave to Remain (visa extension) (A2)
After two-and-a-half years in the UK, non-EEA nationals on the five-year partner or parent route to settlement must pass a SELT in speaking and listening at A2 level in order to qualify for further leave to remain.
Trinity’s GESE Grade 3 exam (CEFR A2)
- 7 minute speaking and listening test
- Provisional results on the same day
- Certificate usually sent within 7 days
- Speaking and listening only
Indefinite Leave to Remain (to settle) or British Citizenship (B1)
For Indefinite Leave to Remain (to settle) or British Citizenship you must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in at least CEFR level B1 in Speaking and Listening.
Trinity’s GESE Grade 5 exam (CEFR B1)
- 10 minute speaking and listening test
- Provisional results on the same day
- Certificate usually sent within 7 days
- Speaking and listening only
Trinity’s ISE:
Integrated Skills in English I (B1) Secure English Language Test (SELT) is a test of 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening and has been approved by TfL for this purpose.
Who is the SELT preparation course for?
- This course is for candidates who need to prepare for a Trinity SELT exam they need for a Home Office visa application in the UK, for an entry application to a UK University, or for work purposes.
- The preparation course will prepare candidates for the exam but they will need to be the correct level of English to pass this exam. If a candidate is not the correct level a 4 hour preparation course will not help them reach the required level.
What will the SELT preparation course involve?
- The content of the course will vary depending on the needs of the learners.
- Prior to the start of the course we will assess your English language level and your skills in Reading, writing, Listening and Speaking.
- We will then run a course to prepare you for the exam you wish to sit.
- The course will cover: exam technique, language improvement, familiarization of the SELT exam structure and criteria and preparation for the 1st part of the exam. We will also provide you with the training materials and details guidance on what you will need to do in order to pass the exam.
- If you are not the level required for the exam we will suggest courses you can do to improve your English before you sit the exam .
- After your preparation course we can book your Trinity SELT exam for you with an examination centre that is most convenient for you.
What level of English do candidates need to have?
Candidates who join a preparation course must be the required level of English to pass the exam they want to sit. Where a candidate is not the required level we recommend that they attend a course to improve their English before they join the preparation course.
